WPMC2002 Honolulu Hawaii

The 5th International Symposium on Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications 2002 (WPMC’02) was held on Sun.27 – Wed.30 October, jointly sponsored by the Communications Research Laboratory (CRL), Independent Administrative Institution, and YRP R&D Promotion Committee. Approximately 400 worldwide researchers participated in the symposium held in Honolulu, Hawaii, US, which was a great success.

Following the tutorial session on 27, the opening ceremony was held on 28. Prof. Gordon L. Stuber, Georgia Institute of Technology, US / General Chair of WPMC’02 delivered the opening address, followed by the greetings from Dr. Takashi Iida, President of CRL, and Dr. Mitsutoshi Hatori, Chairman of YRP R&D Promotion Committee. Then Dr. Paul Mankiewich, Chief Technical Officer, Lucent Technologies US, made a keynote speech entitled “Leading Technologies for Mobility.” Prof. Ryuji Kohno, Yokohama National University, also delivered a keynote address entitled “Anticipation of SDR and UWB” on 29, and Dr. Bill Lane, Chief Technologist, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) US, made another keynote speech on “Directions in Wireless Regulation” on 30.

There were 460 papers submitted to the symposium. Among them, 277 papers were accepted and presented in the Technical Sessions. Furthermore, the best 6 papers of them were commended on the award banquet held in the evening of 29.

Mr. Ryoichi Kabaya, Deputy-Mayor of Yokosuka made a speech on the banquet. Yokosuka will host WPMC’03 to be held on October 19-22, 2003. Furthermore, Mr. Ni Jian Zhong, Vice-Chairman of the China Mobile Communications Association (CMCA), the advisor of the Japan-China Mobile Communications Technology Forum, took the opportunity to introduce WPMC’04 Extra Event scheduled for spring 2004 in China.
